This course will begin September 20th and run five weeks. Meetings will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday afternoons. The location has not been finalized at this time (Aug. 18th). It will probably be at the Tea Party Bookshop or in the classroom at Eric Witchey's home, both are in Salem, OR.
The course will take students from blank page to detailed outline and a number of finished scenes. Processes explored will include fast idea generation, character development, arc development, creation and exploitation of themes, story prototyping (story boarding), emotional cause-and-effect management, and refinement to voice and style. Students who do the homework will end up with a fully developed outline and several completed anchor scenes just in time to move into November and NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month annual event. Taking the class then completing NaNoWriMo will result in a finished draft of a novel in a little over two months. NaNoWriMo is free to all writers.
The class is appropriate to all levels of development. Beginners will learn a framework on which to hang future learning. Veterans will explore techniques designed to create insights into their creative processes and refinements to their current techniques.
